Major Shifts in How Google Displays Sources Inside Generative Search
Google has announced a sweeping set of changes affecting how citations, source carousels, and publisher identities appear across both AI Mode and AI Overviews. According to an announcement from Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management, the search engine is rolling out five distinct updates designed to alter user interaction with generated summaries. For digital marketers and site owners who have watched referral traffic fluctuate amid the rollout of generative features, these alterations signal an ongoing effort by Google to balance synthesized answers with direct visibility for web publishers.
The adjustments touch multiple facets of the search experience, ranging from the placement of inline citations to the expansion of personalized carousels and the integration of creator profiles in video results. While the exact scale of some rollouts remains unquantified, the direction is clear: getting cited early in a generative response carries renewed weight for organic discovery.
What Changed with Inline Links and Official Source Displays
The most immediate change involves the positioning of inline references. Google states that it has made substantial increases to the presence of inline links, placing them higher up in response listings more frequently. Instead of forcing users to scroll to the bottom of an AI-generated block to find supporting references, these citations now appear directly next to relevant text earlier in the interaction.
Alongside higher inline placements, Google is testing a dedicated section at the very top of specific responses for official sites. When a user runs a task-based query where limited authoritative resources exist—such as looking up official airline refund policies or government guidance—the few verified primary sources will sit prominently at the beginning of the response. Google will also supply brief context explaining why each official link provides value for that specific inquiry.
Furthermore, links appearing at the end of AI responses are receiving a visual redesign. These cards now feature image thumbnails and layouts intended to invite higher click-through rates from users who choose to dive deeper into secondary facets of a topic.
Expansion of Preferred Sources and Timely Article Carousels
Content discovery inside generative search is also shifting through the broader deployment of timely article carousels. These modules highlight developing news topics and integrate a user’s Preferred Sources. According to Google, adoption of the Preferred Source setting—which allows individuals to select websites they prefer to see more frequently—has grown significantly over the past several months.
As these carousels scale to new languages and international markets, publishers who have built a loyal readership audience stand to benefit. However, qualifying for these placements requires careful technical alignment. As noted in recent coverage from Search Engine Journal, sites must be visible within generative AI features inside Search Console data reports to properly qualify as a Preferred Source in both AI Overviews and standalone AI Mode.
Publisher Search Profiles Enter AI Mode Video Results
In addition to text citations, Google is experimenting with creator and publisher identity features inside video results generated by AI Mode. Users can now click on a creator or publisher name within a video result to access their centralized Search profile.
Search profiles aggregate a publisher's articles, videos, and social media posts into a single hub. While these profiles were initially spotted inside mobile knowledge panels and Discover feeds, extending them into AI Mode video responses gives recognized publishers another avenue to build brand authority. Eligibility currently requires creators or publishers to meet specific platform follower thresholds across supported networks like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, or X, while operating under an eligible Google Account.
Practical Guidance for Site Owners and Marketers
For technical SEOs and agency leaders monitoring organic visibility, these updates require a shift in measurement and optimization tactics. Because Search Console aggregates all inline links within a single AI Overview into one overall position metric, tracking the exact ranking shift of a single inline link can be complex. Marketers should focus on brand differentiation, structured data integrity, and building direct audience loyalty to encourage users to designate their domain as a Preferred Source.
As these tests continue to expand across global markets, webmasters should audit their performance reports regularly to identify new traffic patterns originating from generative search features.
